Joseph Battell was an American farmer, author, and politician. Born in Middlebury, Vermont, and educated at Middlebury College, he became editor and publisher of the Middlebury Register, and formed the American Publishing Co. He owned several large farms and the Bread Loaf Inn, and raised Morgan horses. He served eight terms in the Vermont State legislature, as a Republican Representative and Senator. Emma Hart Seymour Battell was named for Emma Hart Willard and attended Emma Willard's school in Troy, N.Y., 1823-1825. She met Philip Battell in 1825 when he was a student at Middlebury College and became secretly engaged to him before he graduated in 1826.
